I have used the Sennheiser MD421 dynamic microphone extensively in studio recording, and have grown to love it over the years. I personally prefer to use it with electric guitar and bass amplifiers as it has an excellent mid-range frequency response, that is crucial for guitar and bass tones. The MD421 has a considerably high “pick-up” strength, making it also suitable for Foley work.

The price point does seem to be significantly higher than other dynamic microphones, however I still feel its a very good investment to make for any home or professional recording studios. If you are looking for a quality, “industry standard” microphone that is pretty much indispensable, than the MD421 is the perfect choice. With its durable construction and superb sound quality, there is no reason not to have one!

  1. That looks like a very high quality microphone. And so the price is quite high in my budget. I bought my first microphone and sound card for almost $500 and then I didn’t use them for two years. :D.

    Do the prices of the microphones go usually down over the time? In the cameras and PCs the price goes down but in many musical instruments the price doesn’t go down. How about microphones? For example how much this microphone cost before?

    • Hello Roope!

      Thanks for reading my review. It is unfortunate that this microphone is above your budget, but do check out some of my other microphone reviews if you are ever interested.

      Prices of microphones do not go down as much as other IT products. This is the same for the majority of other audio equipment out there. However, music stores do give a promotion every now and then, to products that have been on the shelves for a while, and needs to be cleared out.

      Cheers =)

  2. Enjoyed reading your content on the microphone. I have never had a microphone before but I guess I don’t need it as don’t do anything that would need one.
    But I can tell it is a really good microphone to have for recording musical instruments. I would defiantly go for this one if I started up a career in music.
    Well written review
